eTextbook fees are charged to students who register for courses participating in the e-text program.
Digital course materials are increasingly available to students for a fraction of the cost of printed materials. Instructors of participating courses are responsible for selecting the eText and/or digital learning tools (DLT) for their respective courses. The selected eText/DLT is automatically pre-purchased for each student upon enrolling in the course, and is made available to the student. eText/DLT charges appear on the student’s tuition eBill.

eText Charges
When a faculty member (or their Course Coordinator, program, department, or school) chooses to teach with a UW-Madison eText, the discounted costs for the selected materials will be charged to enrolled students’ tuition accounts shortly before the first tuition eBill for the coming term is generated.
If a late eText adoption is approved (by the Course Coordinator, program, department, or school), the discounted costs for the selected materials will be charged to enrolled students’ tuition accounts shortly before the next available bill is generated.
How can I opt-out of eText?
Students who do not wish to use and be charged for UW-Madison eText materials should either enroll in a course section that is not making use of a UW-Madison eText, or follow the opt-out procedure.
A student who has opted-out will see a waiver applied to their account in the amount of the UW-Madison eTextbook fee for that course.
eText Refunds
Refunds for students who drop from a class with an UW-Madison eTextbook fee will receive a refund consistent with the tuition adjustment schedule.
Collected UW-Madison eTextbook fees are paid to the publisher partners immediately following each deadline in the refund schedule; thus, no fees for UW-Madison eTextbook materials can be refunded after the class’s refund deadline.
Late Opt-Out Process
If a student needs to request a late opt-out, please review the opt-out considerations document. After reviewing the document, email etexts@doit.wisc.edu to request a late opt-out. Staff will consider the opt-out request based on the following scenarios:
- Late enrollment
- Did not hear from instructor in time regarding requirement of eText / Digital Learning Tool in completing coursework
- Already purchased the eText
Refunds for students who drop from a class with an UW-Madison eTextbook fee will receive a refund consistent with the tuition adjustment schedule.

Appeals for refunds may be granted based on special circumstances. Appeals will be reviewed by the eText pilot sponsors and if approved the pilot team will work with the Registrar’s office to have the fees reimbursed.
